A 21st-Century Wellness Guide
for Teachers,
Students and
Parents
by Sandy Bothmer
with Illustrations by Jan Mercuri Grossman
Since the first edition of Creating the Peaceable Classroom appeared in 2003, virtually all of the same conditions that create stress in the classroom and at home remain, and new ones have arrived. The success of the first edition, along with the increasing complexity of our lives, and an increased receptivity to the techniques presented in this book are the impetus for a new book.
Creating the Peaceable Classroom is intended to assist the community of teachers, paraprofessionals, counselors, psychologists, school nurses, administrators, students, and parents, to create calm and useful energy within themselves and their environment.
This edition is richer and fuller than the first. It includes more detailed information in many chapters along with new charts and diagrams. Also new are the Hints, and there are Special Education sections addressed directly to those teachers or students. The Parent Connection sections offer parents possibilities for using these same techniques at home.* * *
"One of Sandy's many gifts is this beautiful masterpiece Creating the Peaceable Classroom. She has captured, synthesized and fully understands the needs of children in the 21st century. Sandy offers simple tools to integrate numerous possibilities seamlessly into a teaching environment. These tools are essential values necessary for children and adults to live a fully balanced, integrated and happy life. There is no doubt in my mind that Creating the Peaceable Classroom ought to be required reading for every teacher and caregiver."
—Rosemary Todd Clough, founder of Creative Kids Yoga®"Sandy Bothmer's Peaceable Classroom has been an indispensable resource for years in my consultation to programs for students with autism spectrum disorders. The '21st century wellness guide' provides even more wisdom for the classroom and for parents.
I especially like the 'Parent Connections.' Parents so often forget to take care of themselves. Sandy has some excellent suggestions that can fit into the days of even the busiest families.
Wow! The movement and music chapters are chock full of fabulous ideas!"
—Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.
